H.E.THOMAS MAR DEOSCOROS

Thomas Mar Dioscoros was born on the 4 January 1884 as the second son of Thomman Kuruvila, of the ancient Thenalady Family in Chingavanam and of Naithi Amma. His Father Sri Thomman Kuruvila was a member of the Travancore Praja Sabha.

He completed his education at CMS School at Pallom and the CMS College at Kottayam. Bishop Mar Gregorios of Parumala recognised his interests in spiritual matters and ordained him as deacon when he was eighteen. He studied thoroughly Syriac language, the regulations and the liturgical practices. When he was twenty eight years old, Archbishop Mar Saverios Edavazhikkal Gheevarghese of Knanaya Diocese, ordained him a priest. 

In 1921 he was reunited and joined the Kottayam diocese. On 5 July 1921 permission was received from Rome to use the Antiochean Syrian Rite and he offered mass in the Catholic Church in Antiochean Syrian Rite. On 11 November 1926 he was consecrated bishop by the Patriarch Ignatios Elias the Third in Jerusalem and took the name Mar Diascoros. When he returned to his land he assumed office as the auxiliary bishop of Mar Saverios. On 11 June 1927 he took charge as the Head of the Knanonite diocese after the demise of Mar Saverios. His time in office (1927-1939) was a period of developments for the community.

The significant Malankara Reunion that took place on 20 September 1930, under the leadership of the Servant of God Mar Ivanios, made him enthusiastic to join Malankara Catholic Church. He was reunited and joined the Malankara Catholic Church on 12 November 1939 at Trivandrum and confessed the true faith in the presence of Archbishop Mar Ivanios.

On 21 February 1943 on Kohane Sunday, his soul reached the heavenly Father. His mortal remains are kept in the special tomb adjacent to St. Thomas Bethany Church, Tirumoolapuram.
