H.E. GEEVARGHESE MAR TIMOTHEOS

His Excellency Most Rev. Geevarghese Mar Timotheos was the first born son of Rev. Fr. Jacob in the blessed family of Chudevalel and of Annamma of Puthenpeedika, Karthikappally at Amayannur near Manarcadu, Kottayam District on 2 February 1928. He was baptised as George at the St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Church. Rev. Fr. Jacob and family reunited to Catholic Church on 1940. Rev. Fr. Abraham Marett (Senior) reunited them to the Catholic Church. He joined the Pushpagiri Minor Seminary (the present Infant Mary’s) for seminary formation with the wishes and blessings of His Excellency Most Rev. Severios, after completing his studies at class 10. Thereafter he joined Kandy Seminary at Ceylon (the present Sri Lanka) on 1945 for the studies of Philosophy and Theology. After completing the formation he was ordained priest by Bishop Glenin at Kandy Seminary on 24 August 1953.

Rev. Fr. George Chundevalel returned to India on the same year and was appointed as the Vicar at Kothamangalom, Nellimattom and Amayannur. He was sent to Rome for higher studies in 1963. He returned in 1967 after possessing a degree in higher studies in Spiritual Theology from the Gregorian University of Rome was appointed as the Rector of Minor Seminary, Vicar of Cathedral, Vicar General and General administrator of the Eparchy for a long time.

While His Excellency Most Rev. Isaac Mar Yoohanon died, he was selected as the Bishop of the Eparchy on 19 May 1986. He was ordained as Ramban at Amayannur Church was his mother Church, on 26 June 1988. He was ordained as a Bishop by His Grace Benedict Mar Gregorios in the name of Geevarghese Mar Timotheos at the St. John’s Metropolitan Cathedral on 6 August 1988. His motto was “At thy word I will let down the net.”

His Excellency Most Rev. Koorilos was appointed as the auxiliary bishop on 17 July 1977 in order to make the ministries of the Eparchy more fruitful and afterwards when the Muvattupuzha Eparchy was formed he was appointed as the first shepherd. He began to reside at Pallimala, Tiruvalla, resigned from responsibilities. Afterwards his stay was shifted to Medical College, Pushpagiri, due to healthy condition. 

He was called to eternal rest from us on 4 June 2019 and his mortal body is entombed in St. John’s Cathedral, Tiruvalla.
